Waikiki: Historic theatre to be town down
The old theatre, the Waikiki III, which has for many decades been a landmark on Kalakaua Avenue, will be torn down in the next couple of weeks to make way for a new retail complex.
The $10 million complex that eventually will be home to Foot Locker, California Pizza Kitchen, a steak and seafood restaurant and some 80 different kiosks is being developed by an arm of Consolidated Theatres which owns the theatre.
The developer, Robertson Properties Group, plans to incorporate the big ‘ WAIKIKI’ sign that helped make the Waikiki III theatre a landmark. They will also be using some of the decorative grills displayed on the exterior of the building.
he project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2006. Consolidated is still looking for a use of the old I-MAX theater and the Waikiki I and II theatres.
